A pair of miniature dress medals attributed to Lieutenant-Colonel G. Chapman, 36th Native Infantry

Attributed to Lieutenant-Colonel George Chapman, who as a Captain of the 36th Native Infantry is shown as entitled to the clasps Bhurtpoor and Ava. He is not listed as being entitled to the clasp Java.

George Chapman was born in Northampton on 31 August 1792. Appointed a Cadet, he arrived in India in July 1809 and was commissioned an Ensign in November 1809. He was promoted to Lieutenant in February 1814, Captain in May 1825 and Major in June 1838. Chapman was invalided on 14 November 1846 and retired on 12 January 1848. He was granted the honorary rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in November 1854. He died at his residence at Oaklands, Redhill, Surrey on 16 January 1863. Serving mainly with the 36th Native Infantry, he was present during the 1st Burma War and at Ava; the siege and capture of Bhurtpoor, and the Shekhawat Expedition 1834. Sold with copied research.
