Catuvellauni, Agr, Unit, AGR within wreath of acorns, rev. she-lion or bitch right with snake, AGR in exergue, 1.30g/1h (BMC 1899; VA –; S 354; CCI 97.1258, same dies). Some surface staining, otherwise better than very fine, extremely rare; only five specimens recorded in the CCI £800-1,000
Provenance: Found near Colchester (Essex).
Learned opinion suggests that AGR may stand for Agrippa or perhaps Agricola, a Romanized member of the ruling family of the Catuvellauni and one of the many sons of Cunobelin. As such, it would have been struck around AD 40, shortly before the Claudian invasion and probably not far from its Essex find-spot
