Henry I (1100-1135), Penny, Voided Cross with Fleurs type, Ipswich, Germane, GERMANE: ON: GIPS, 0.87gm (Harris, SCMB 1985 –; BMC –; N 861; S 1266). Flatly struck and a small surface crack on obverse at 9 o’clock, otherwise about fine and all the important detail clear, extremely rare, believed the only known coin of this class for the mint (£300-500)
Harris (SCMB 1985 pp.16 and 152) records no coins of BMC types IV to IX for Ipswich; Germane was previously first recorded as an Ipswich moneyer in type X, then XIV and into Stephen’s reign
