William Sillwood was born in Arundel on 3 March 1896 and entered the Royal Navy in October 1911. During the Great War he served on the battleship Hercules, October 1913-February 1917 and May 1917-August 1919, seeing service at the battle of Jutland. He was awarded the L.S. & G.C. in 1929 on the battleship Nelson.
