In August 1914 the 4th Dragoon Guards were stationed at Tidworth. They entered France on 15 August 1914 as part of the 2nd Cavalry Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division. George Walter Francis attested for the 4th Dragoon Guards at Canterbury on 19 November 1895, aged 18 years, 8 months. With the regiment he served in India, February 1897-January 1904. Transferred to the Army Reserve in January 1904, he was recalled to the Colours in August 1914 and entered France. He served on the Western Front and suffered shell-shock on 11 February 1916. In March 1918 he was posted to the 6th Reserve Cavalry Regiment and was transferred to Class ‘Z’ Reserve in January 1919. Research indicates that Francis was one of six other ranks of the regiment to be awarded the above medal and clasp combination. With copied service papers, m.i.c. and other research.
