At the outbreak of the war the 6th Dragoons were stationed at Muttra, India. They entered France on 14 December 1914 as part of the 5th (Mhow) Cavalry Brigade, 2nd Indian Cavalry Division. As such they were not entitled (as a regiment) to the 1914 Star. Notwithstanding, a fair number of Depot and Reservist members of the Regiment earned the 1914 Star whilst attached to other units, most notably, the Household Cavalry.

George Pegram was born in the Parish of Lee, Lewisham, Kent. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the Dragoons of the Line at Aldershot on 6 October 1902, aged 20 years, 11 months. Posted to the 2nd Dragoon Guards, he was transferred to the 6th Dragoons in June 1904 and to the Army Reserve in October 1905. On the outbreak of war he was mobilised and served in France from 5 October 1914, attached to the 1st Life Guards. Pegram was discharged on 5 October 1915 on completion of his first period of engagement.
