At the outbreak of war the 8th Hussars were stationed at Ambala, India. They entered France on 10 November 1914 as part of the 3rd (Ambala) Cavalry Brigade, 1st Indian Cavalry Division.

Bertie Joseph Warne was born in Ipswich in 1889. As a Corporal in the 8th Hussars, he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 11 November 1914. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the 6th Battalion Middlesex Regiment on 29 August 1917. As a 2nd Lieutenant in the 21st Battalion Middlesex Regiment, he died of wounds on 4 April 1918, aged 29 years and was buried in the Etaples Military Cemetery. He was the husband of Jane E. Warne, of 15 Standish Road, Hammersmith, London.
