India General Service 1854-95, 1 clasp, Waziristan 1894-5 (3415 Lce Corpl. J. Winter, 2d Bn. Border Regt.) nearly extremely fine £150-200

John Winter was born in Birmingham. A Gilder by occupation and a member of the 4th Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment, he attested for full-time service in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment at Warwick on 15 August 1888, aged 18 years. He served in India, November 1890-March 1896, transferring to the Border Regiment in January 1892. He qualified for the Waziristan clasp with service between 17 November 1894 and 13 March 1895. Transferred to the Army Reserve in April 1896, he was recalled to Army service in October 1899, serving with the Border Regiment in South Africa, March 1900-March 1901. Discharged on 14 August 1901.

As a result of this service he was additionally awarded the Queen’s medal with clasps for Cape Colony, Transvaal, Natal and South Africa 1901.
