Hugh Guy Osbert Wyndham was born on 24 February 1926, the fourth son of Colonel Guy P. Wyndham, 16th Lancers, and a great grandson of George Wyndham, 1st Baron Leconfield. He was educated at Eton School and Corpus Christi College, Oxford.

Served with the 3rd Battalion Coldstream Guards in the final phases of the Second World War in Italy. Awarded the 1939-45 Star; Italy Star and War Medal. Later served as a Platoon Commander in Palestine 1945-48.
