A Great War ‘1914’ D.C.M. group of three awarded to Acting Serjeant J. Buchanan, 2nd Battalion Highland Light Infantry, killed in action, Flanders, 7 November 1914

D.C.M. London Gazette 10 March 1915; citation 1 April 1915. ‘For gallant conduct and ability on 7th November, 1914, when he promptly took command, after his Officer had been wounded, and handled his men in a skilful manner.’

James Buchanan was born in Bothwell and lived in Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire and enlisted at Glasgow. Serving in the 2nd Battalion Highland Light Infantry, he entered France on 14 August 1914. He was killed in action on 7 November 1914 the same day as gallantly leading his men into action after his officer was wounded. For his leadership in action he was mentioned in despatches and awarded the D.C.M. Acting Serjeant James Buchanan was buried in the Oosttaverne Wood Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.
