James William Telfer served with the Black Watch, attached 50th Coy. Machine Gun Corps, in France from 11 August 1916. He applied to join the Indian Army in November 1917, which was approved early the following year as a probationary officer. He served in Afghanistan, attached 287th M.G. Coy, 2/95th Infantry, but reverted to the British Service at his own request and was posted to the Machine Gun Centre from 14 June 1919.
