R.S.P.C.A. Life Saving Medal, bronze (F. J. Thumwood, 1944) complete with brooch bar, in fitted case of issue, extremely fine £180-220
Frederick Thumwood was born in Mitcham, Surrey in 1896, the son of Edward and Rosa Thumwood. In the 1901 Census his father is listed as a Pig and Cattle Dealer; in the 1911 census he is listed as a Coal Carter, whilst the 15 year old Frederick is listed as a Baker, all living at Shamley Green, Surrey.
With original R.S.P.C.A. bestowal document, dated 11 December 1944, bearing the citation:
‘This is to Certify that the Bronze Medal of the Society has been awarded to F. J. Thumwood for his courage and humanity in stopping a runaway horse in Thornton Heath, Surrey, this avoiding a serious accident, on the 17th November, 1944.’
