J. P. Ireland was born in Dundee and served as Private 9177, 1st Volunteer Battalion Black Watch in South Africa and was awarded the Queen’s medal with clasps for Cape Colony, Orange Free State and South Africa 1902. He was made Honorary Burgess of Dundee. In the Great War, as Sergeant 200761 in the 4th/5th Black Watch, he was killed in action, near Tower Hamlets, at the Third Battle of Ypres, 29 September 1917. His name is recorded on the Dundee Memorial.
