Charles Turner was an Ensign in the Argyllshire Fencibles, prior to being appointed an Ensign in the 2nd Queen’s on 24 October 1795. Appointed Captain, Royal African Corps, June 1803; Major, without purchase, May 1804; transferred to the Royal West India Rangers, May 1804; promoted Lieutenant-Colonel, May 1807; Brevet Colonel, June 1814. On Half Pay Royal West India Rangers, by reduction, December 1818. Promoted Major-General, July 1821. Appointed Colonel, Royal Africa Corps, July 1824. Died at Sierra Leone on 7 March 1826.
Served in the suppression of the Irish Rebellion 1798 - capturing Bagenal Harvey. Served in the Peninsular War - was wounded and lost his left arm at Badajoz, 10 May 1811, whilst in command of the 17th Portuguese Infantry. Later awarded the C.B. for his wartime services. Appointed Captain-General and Commander-in-Chief in Africa, 24 June 1824.
