An 1821 pattern infantry Royal Marine light Infantry presentation sword, the 83cm blade etched with crowned VR cypher, the globe and motto of the Royal Marines ‘Per mare per terrant’ and ‘Gibraltar’ and within a long scrolling ribbon the presentation inscription ‘Presented to Quartermaster G Rendell, RMLI by the Staff Sergeants and Sergeants of the Royal Marines Depot. Walmer as a mark of esteem for their old Sergeant Major on his promotion’. Regulation brass guard incorporating the Royal cypher, fish-skin covered grip bound with brass wire, complete with its steel scabbard with two hanging rings, blade retaining almost all original finish and good condition overall £300-350
Gyles Rendell was born at Castle Cary, Somerset, in 1842, attesting at Yeovil, in July, 1860 at the age of 18, he re-engaged in July 1868 then a Staff-sergeant serving with the 39th Company to complete 21 years, he received his LSGC in July 1875.
Having served several seagoing postings he later served at various Royal Marine depots, and was finally ‘Discharged Dead’ from Plymouth Headquarters on 30th March 1883.
