AFGHANISTAN 1878-80, 1 clasp, Ahmed Khel (Lieut. J.F. Irwin, 59th Foot) very fine

Major John Frederick Irwin served with the 59th Regiment in the Afghan War with the Kandahar Column under Sir D. Stewart during 1878 as Orderly Officer to Brig. General Hughes. He took part in the advance on Khelat and Ghuznee, and in subsequent operations in the Logar Valley. He was sent in command of a small force of all arms to attack Mohammad Jan on the 23rd October, 1879, and was present at the action of Shah Jui on the following day. He rejoined the Regiment on 3rd January, 1880, and was present with it at the battle of Ahmed Khel and action of Arzu. From June to August, 1880, he served as Baggage Master to the 2nd Brigade (mentioned in despatches, medal with clasp). Sold with a copy of group photograph which includes Irwin, taken at Kandahar, 1880.
