A Great War M.C. group of three for Messines, awarded to Captain J.S. Yule, 37th Battalion, Australian Imperial Forces

John Smythe Yule was born in Richmond, Victoria on 22nd April, 1881. He matriculated from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Melbourne, in 1896 and obtained his degrees of M.B. and B.S. in 1909, when he lefr Victoria for Western Australia where he established a professional practise. He enlisted in the Australian Army Medical Corps. R.M.O., 37th Battalion A.I.F. and was awarded the M.C. for gallantry at Messines in 1917. The following citation was extracted from official records: 'On the 7th, 8th and 9th June, 1917, at MESSINES for the display of great courage and conspicuous devotion to duty whilst under heavy shell fire during the attack on MESSINES Ridge. Although gassed early in the operation this officer remained continuously on duty until his Battalion was relieved on the morning of the 9th June. During this time 450 cases passed through his Regimental Aid Post. The gallant conduct of this officer whilst under heavy hostile shell fire has been brought under notice on numerous previous occasions.'
