Lord Charles Edward Hay served with the Queen's regiment in the Kaffir War of 1851-52, and with the expedition North of the Orange River in 1852-53. He was born in 1833, the 5th son of Field-Marshal Sir George Hay, K.T., G.C.B., 8th Marquess of Tweeddale.
