Among other monetary reforms introduced by Akbar, the greatest of the Mughul emperors, one of the most novel was his decision to strike square Mohurs and Rupees. The English numismatist, Stanley Lane-Poole, writing at the end of the last century, although full of admiration for his achievements in other fields is a little condescending on the matter:"Akbar", he states "was troubled with a perpetual restless yearning after innovation, in small matters as well as great; and among the useless changes he devised.., was an alteration of the shape of the money. Coins had hitherto been usually round, which wassufficient reason for their being now square".
