Lieutenant Commander Peter Noel Hiles joined the R.A.F.V.R. as a Pilot Officer in 1944, transferred to the R.N.V.R. (A) early in 1945 as a Sub Lieutenant (A) with seniority of 27 February, 1945. Promoted to Lieutenant (A) R.N.V.R. 27 February, 1947. Granted a permanent commission in Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm in 1947 as a Lieutenant (A) with seniority of 27 February 1947. Promoted to Lieutenant Commander 27 February 1955. During his flying career Lt. Cdr. Hiles flew the majority of the fixed wing aircraft in service with the Fleet Air Arm as evidenced by the following list: Harvard, Corsair, Hell Cat, Sea Fire Mk 15, Firefly Mkl and Mk4, Oxford, Sea Mosquito 33, Sea Fury 11, Vampire, Meteor, Sea Hornet 22, Fire Brand 5, Sturgeon, Skyraider, Centinal and Dakota. During his operational career he was attached to the following 15 Squadrons: 703, 749, 766 (2), 778, 781, 792, 794, 796, 799, 804, 805, 809, 812 (2), 827, 849. In February 1964 Hiles qualified as a Second Class Interpreter in Russian. He retired in 1975, his last appointment being with the Defence Intelligence Service. He died in 1992.
