A Northern Ireland, South Atlantic pair awarded to Lance Sergeant T. McGuinness, Scots Guards, who was mentioned in despatches for the battle of Tumbledown Mountain

CAMPAIGN SERVICE 1962, 1 clasp, Northern Ireland (24438768 L.Cpl., S.G.); SOUTH ATLANTIC 1982, with rosette and M.I.D. oakleaf (24438768 Cpl., S.G.) mounted as worn, very fine (2)

M.I.D., London Gazette, 8 October, 1982. Awarded for his gallantry during the battle for Tumbledown Mountain on the night of 13-14 June 1982.

Lance Sergeant McGuinness was the Section Commander of 13 Platoon ‘G’ Company, and as such was in the thick of the assault during which his section had five fatal casualties. Lance Sergeant McGuinness was personally responsible for destroying three Argentine sangars during the three hours that ‘G’ Company was pinned down. 13 Platoon managed to climb into the rocks on the northern side of the ridge from where they were able to bring devastating fire down on the Argentinian positions. By taking the Argentinians completely by surprise, not only did McGuinness' section save the Company from being annihilated, it enabled Major Kizzley, M.C., with 14 and 15 Platoons to attain the Company's ultimate objective, Tumbledown. (Ref. Above and Beyond, A.M. Palmer 1993) Sold with copy discharge document and copy M.I.D. certificate.
