Frank Alford Kingswell joined the Yorkshire Dragoons 1898 and served with the 11th Company, 3rd Bn. Imperial Yeomanry in South Africa 1900-1901. He was wounded in the shoulder at Rietfontein, 9 August 1900 and was Mentioned in Despatches. He served on in the Yorkshire Dragoons and was discharged with the rank of squadron sergeant-major in 1907. He qualified as a solicitor and practised at Wakefield. On the outbreak of war he obtained a commission in 1/1st Yorkshire Dragoons and served with “B” Squadron in France from August 1915. He also acted as Divisional Grenade Officer with temporary rank of Captain. He was seconded to the 13th (S) Bn. Rifle Brigade, 18 August 1916 and was promoted to Acting Captain while commanding a company, 1 October 1916. He received severe bullet wounds in the right arm and leg whilst commanding “C” Company in the attack at Beaucourt-sur-Ancre on 14 November. Kingswell transferred to the Rifle Brigade as a subaltern in 1917, was advanced to Lieutenant and joined the 8th (S) Bn. in France in December as O.C. “A” Company, shortly afterwards becoming O.C. “B” Company. He was Killed in Action by machine gun fire during the German Offensive at Flavy-le-Martel on 22nd March 1918. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial.

With regard to the discrepancy in initials between the Q.S.A. and the trio, Kingswell’s regimental no. is correct on his Q.S.A. and on his Short Service Attestation paper he is given as A. Kingswell.
