Cyril Marshall was born on 6 April 1870 in Looe, Cornwall, and was a drill engineer before he entered the service as a Stoker 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. INDUS on 4 March 1889 when aged 19 years. He served in BONAVENTURE off the Chinese coast between July and December 1900, and was pensioned ashore on 8 March 1911 after 21 years adult service. He joined the R.F.R. at Devonport on 16 July 1911 and was mobilised on 2 August 1914 in the rate of Stoker Petty Officer aboard VIVID II. He served aboard SATELLITE, WALLINGTON and GANGES until demobilised on 22 February 1919. He was not entitled to the L.S. & G.C. medal.
