D.S.M. London Gazette 11.6.1942. ‘The King has been graciously pleased, on the occasion of the Celebration of His Majesty’s Birthday, to approve the awards ... for outstanding zeal, patience and cheerfulness, and for never failing to set an example of wholehearted devotion to duty, without which the high tradition of the Royal Navy could not have been upheld.’

Chief Stoker Charles Frederick Stevens was born in the Parish of Hackney in 1891 and entered the Royal Navy in 1910 as a Stoker 2nd Class aboard the battlecruiser H.M.S.
Renown. Promoted Stoker 1st Class in 1911, he entered the Great War serving on the pre-dreadnought battleship H.M.S. Hindustan and was promoted Stoker Petty Officer in 1918 whilst aboard the cruiser H.M.S. Birmingham. Awarded the L.S. & G.C. Medal in 1925 whilst based at Rosyth (H.M.S. Columbine) and promoted Chief Stoker in 1927, he served on the battleship H.M.S. Iron Duke during 1930-31. In the Second World War, during the period 1 January 1941 to 25 January 1942, he was Chief Stoker aboard the battleship H.M.S. Queen Elizabeth, and consequently a participant in the Crete operations, services that might well have contributed to his D.S.M. in the Birthday Honours List. Stevens was pensioned from the Service in November 1944.

Sold with his original Certificate of Service and National Association for Employment of Regular Sailors, Soldiers and Airmen registration slip whilst serving aboard H.M.S.
Iron Duke.
