France, France, 8th Congrès Dentaire International, Paris, 1931, a large uniface cast bronze portrait plaque by T. Spicer-Simson, bust of Georges Villain left, truncation signed T·S·S·1932, 265 x 195mm. Extremely fine and a most handsome plaque, extremely rare; possibly the only known specimen (£120-150)

An unusual plaque relating to the dental profession, paying tribute to the president of Congrès, Georges Villain. It was cast in 1932 by Theodore Spicer-Simson (1871-1959), the British artist who took up permanent residency in the USA in 1915; presumably he executed the work at a studio he maintained in Paris between the two World Wars
