British War Medal 1914-20 (Chapn. Sir W. A. Heathcote, R.N.) scratch to obverse, otherwise nearly extremely fine £80-100

William Arthur Heathcote was born at Colway, near Lyme Regis on 22.7.1853, the eldest son of the 6th Baronet, William Percival Heathcote and Letitia Maria Daly. From a Roman Catholic family, he was educated at Beaumont from the age of 9 to 18 years and then at Manresa, he returned to Beaumont as a Master in 1876. He was ordained at St. Beuno’s in 1885 and later returned to Beaumont and subsequently held the post of Rector. Whilst at the college he was often referred to by his colleagues as ‘The Baron’; the boys named him ‘The General’ on account of his martial bearing. He subsequently became Minister at Stoneyhurst, 1897-1903 and did two periods of Mission work at Preston. In 1903 he succeeded his father as 7th Baronet. With the outbreak of the Great War he became a Roman Catholic Chaplain with the Royal Navy, serving firstly in Cromarty and then in Portsmouth. After the War he was appointed Missioner at Stoneyhurst. He died on 9.9.1924. Sold with some research details.
