William James Westland was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant on the General List in July 1915, direct from the Ceylon Planters Rifle Corps. Subsequently appointed to the 8th Battalion, Scottish Rifles, he at onetime held the acting rank of captain while serving as C.O. of a Bombing School. Westland retired in 1920.
