Richard Burges Hunt was appointed Ensign in the Royal Artillery on 8 September 1803, becoming Lieutenant two weeks later, and promoted to Captain on 11 August 1811. He served at Hanover in 1805-06; at Copenhagen in 1807; and in the Peninsula from September 1810 to May 1812, including the siege of Ciudad Rodrigo as Aide de Camp to Major-General William Borthwick who commanded the artillery at that siege.
