Charles Alexander Howell joined the Royal Navy as a Naval Cadet on 15 January 1876. He trained aboard Britannia and Royal Adelaide, and served subsequently aboard Black Prince, Boadicea and Duke of Wellington. He was discharged the service through ill-health on 17 November 1881.
