John Devery was born at Hyderabad, Scinde, India, on 13 October 1859, son of Sergeant Bernard Devery, 64th Foot. He attested for the 68th Foot at Poona on 11 July 1873, aged 13 years 9 months, and transferred to the 2nd Battalion 24th Foot (25B/2809) on 30 May 1879. He was appointed Lance Corporal in December 1879, promoted to Corporal in March 1880, and to Sergeant in May 1881. His service continued in the South Wales Borderers (SWB/1577) from July 1881, and he was promoted Colour-Sergeant in December 1887. Placed on the unattached List in July 1892, Devery transferred to the Royal Irish Fusiliers in October of that year, and was discharged to pension on 15 July 1894.

Devery served in India, July 1873 to April 1879; England, April to May 1879; South Africa, May 1879 to January 1880; Mediterranean, January 1880; India, August 1880 to May 1886; Burma, May 1886 to November 1888; India, November 1888 to July 1894. He was awarded the L.S. & G.C. medal on 16 August 1892.
