James France was born in Byker, Northumberland, and enlisted for the Northumberland Fusiliers at Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He served during the Great War with the 1/6th Battalion (Territorial Force) on the Western Front, was wounded on 31 May 1916, and killed in action at Estiarts on 10 April 1918. He has no known grave, and is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.
