A Great War 1916 ‘Somme’ M.M. awarded to Private J. Baines, Manchester Regiment, who was twice wounded at Ypres, served with the Regiment at Gallipoli and on the Somme, and was wounded for a third time at Passchendaele in August 1917

J. Baines attested for the Manchester Regiment and served with the 2nd Battalion during the Great War. ‘Mobilised in August 1914, he was at once ordered to the Western Front, where he fought in the Battles of Mons, the Aisne, and the Marne, and was twice wounded in action at Ypres. In October 1915 he was sent to Gallipoli, and served there until the Evacuation of the Peninsula, when he returned to France. After fighting with distinction in engagements at the Somme and Ypres, he was again wounded at Passchendaele in August 1917, and in consequence was invalided out of the Army four months later. He was awarded the Military Medal for conspicuous bravery at Thiepval in August 1916.’ (National Roll of the Great War refers).
