Angus McInnes Aitchison attested for the South African Overseas Expeditionary Force at Potchefstroom on 11 August 1915, and served with the 4th South African Infantry during the Great War on the Western Front from 16 April 1916. He suffered a gun shot wound to the left lung at Delville Wood, Somme, on 21 July 1916, and was discharged on account of his wounds at Wynburg on 10 November 1917.

William McInnes Aitchison, the son of Angus Aitchison, and his wife Marie Louise, was born on 20 June 1907 and attested for the South African Medical Corps on 5 June 1940, having previously served in the Rand Light Infantry from 1 July 1929 to 9 December 1932. He served during the Second World War in East Africa as part of the East African Field Hygiene Section, S.A.M.C., from 24 July 1940, and was advanced Warrant Officer Class II on 1 September 1941. He was discharged on 23 November 1945.
