Pembroke); Russian Cross of St. George, 4th class, the reverse officially numbered ‘870226’ the first with slack suspension and both Great War awards with edge bruising and heavily polished, fine, the remainder about very fine and better (7) £350-400
Sydney George Tubbs was born at Hastings in November 1898 and enlisted in the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in the Ganges in August 1915. His first seagoing appointment was aboard H.M.S. Repulse, in which battle cruiser he served from August 1916 until December 1918, followed by the cruiser Calypso from February 1919 until August 1920, in the Baltic, for which latter services he was awarded his Russian Cross of St. George on 20 October 1919 - the Calypso was damaged on a wreck off Libau while en route to Revel, Estonia.
Attaining promotion to Petty Officer in February 1929, Tubbs was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in January 1932 and qualified for his the Naval General Service Medal for Palestine 1936-39 while employed aboard the battleship Valiant. And in April 1937 he was advanced to Chief Petty Officer.
During the Second World War, Tubbs served at the shore establishments Lynx and Pembroke, and in Elfin from March 1942 until November 1945, in which latter month he was finally discharged.
