Memorial Plaque (Ernest John Daniels) pierced at 12 o’clock, polished, fine £60-£80
Ernest John Daniels joined the Royal Navy and served as a Ship’s Steward’s Assistant in the Admiralty mine carrier M.F.A. Eleanor. He was killed in action when the Eleanor was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine UB-57, under the command of Oblerleutnant zur See Johannes Lohs, off the Isle of Wight on 12 February 1918 - loaded with a cargo of 1,434 mines and 200 depth charges she was proceeding from Immingham to Falmouth. At 04:40 when 12 miles east-south-east of Anvil Point, Dorset, she was attacked and sank immediately. Of the crew of 35 there was only one survivor.
Daniels was amongst those killed. He is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial.
