George Cranmore enlisted in the Rifle Brigade in October 1855 and was embarked for India in late 1857, where he joined the 3rd Battalion, was onetime attached to the Camel Corps, and saw action in the Lucknow operations (Medal with clasp). And in the period December 1863 to January 1864, he witnessed further action on the North West Frontier as part of the punitive expedition launched against Sultan Muhammed Khan, who had attacked the fort at Shabkadar (Medal with clasp). Cranmore was discharged back in Winchester in May 1866.
