Robert Wilson was born in Durham and served during the Great War initially with the 5th South African Mounted Rifles in German South West Africa, before attesting for the South African Overseas Expeditionary Force at Kimberley on 29 March 1917. He served with the 4th South African Infantry on the Western Front from 13 July 1917, and was taken Prisoner of War at Marriers Wood, during the German Spring Offensive, on 24 March 1918. He was repatriated following the cessation of hostilities on 7 December 1918, and was discharged on 7 May 1919.
