C. D. Balding was originally commissioned in the Hampshire Regiment, before being seconded to the Indian Army Reserve of Officers in May 1916. He advanced to Lieutenant in July 1917, and served as Company Commander of the Allahabad University Infantry, Indian Defence Force, from November 1917. Balding was attached to 1/113th Infantry, 28 November 1918 - 23 February 1919. He advanced to Captain in September 1919, and to Major in August 1933. Balding served with the 3/20th Burma Rifles, before transferring to the Special Unemployed List in April 1939. He retired in March 1943.
