Alexander Shairp was born in September 1873, and was the son of N. W. Shairp, J.P. He was commissioned Second Lieutenant in November 1894, and transferred to the Indian Army in February 1896. Shairp advanced to Captain in the Supply and Transport Corps in November 1903, and served with the latter in East Africa.
Shairp advanced to Major in November 1912, and served during the Great War as a Temporary Lieutenant-Colonel in the Egyptian theatre of war from 1914 (Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel). He was appointed Deputy Secretary, Army and Marine Department, Government of India in April 1917. Shairp died in January 1944.
