Michael Harris Thornely was commissioned Lieutenant in the Indian Medical Service on 27 January 1900, and served during the operations in Waziristan 1901-02 with the 3rd Sikhs. He was promoted Captain on 27 January 1903, and Major on 27 July 1911, and served during the Great War in the Egyptian theatre of War from 30 November 1914.
