James Michael Curley (1874-1958), American political leader from Boston; member of Boston Common Council, 1900-1; Democrat in Massachusetts House of Representatives, 1902-3, then US House of Representatives, 1911-14; thrice mayor of Boston, 1914-18, 1922-5 and 1930-3; governor of Masschusetts, 1935-7; subsequent to being elected mayor of Boston for a fourth time in 1945 he was convicted of mail fraud and served five months in prison in 1947 before his sentence was commuted by President Truman; he returned to complete his last term as mayor, 1947-50.
