Iceland, Republic, Medal for Valour, Second Class, 30mm, silver (Terence William Greene 19.9.1981) in case of issue, extremely fine, rare £140-£180
Terence William Green, a crew member of the R.N.L.I. Lifeboat Diana White, was awarded the Icelandic Medal for Valour for his part in rescuing the entire crew of 11 men of the Icelandic cargo ship M/V Tungufoss, which went down during the darkness of night and in gale-force seas off Land’s End, Cornwall, on 19 September 1981. A total of eleven medals were awarded for this rescue, four to the Royal Navy crew of a Sea King helicopter; and seven to the crew of the Diana White. Green received his medal from the President of Iceland, Mrs. Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, at a ceremony in London on 17 February 1982.
Note: The Icelandic Medal for Valour could be conferred only upon those who risk their own lives in saving the lives of Icelanders. This was the first instance in which the medal had been awarded to foreign nationals.
