Samuel Edward Watkins was born in Bristol, Gloucestershire in March 1873. He joined the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class in July 1893. Watkins served with H.M.S. Magicienne, November 1897 - June 1901, and advanced to Stoker Petty Officer in July 1906. He advanced to Chief Stoker in February 1910, and served with the battleship H.M.S. Collingwood from that year and for the duration of the Great War - including during the Battle of Jutland. Watkins was demobilised in March 1919.
