The series of riots in Birmingham, which began on the evening of 14 July 1791 (see lot 1541) and lasted three days, resulted in the destruction of a vast amount of valuable property and was only halted by the actions of the militia brought in from Nottingham. In a subsequent series of trials at Warwick and Worcester, four of the ringleaders were hanged
