Charles Tinney was born at Plymouth on 29 August 1870, and joined the Royal Navy as a shipwright on 7 September 1891. Advanced Leading Shipwright on 24 October 1898, and Carpenter’s Mate on 7 June 1900, he served in the Composite Screw Gunboat H.M.S. Redpole from 7 June 1900 to 8 May 1902, and was present during the Boxer Rebellion. He joined H.M.S. Challenger on 16 December 1905, and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 6 November 1906. Discharged to pension on 10 September 1913, he was recalled for service on 2 August 1914, and served during the Great War in H.M.S. Albion, before being invalided out of the service with Aortic Disease on 15 February 1915.
Approximately 72 medals, all without clasp, awarded to H.M.S. Redpole.
