D.C.M. London Gazette 3 September 1919:
‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On 19th August, with two officers, he went on a daylight patrol which entered the enemy’s line and stayed there for four hours, gaining much valuable information. On the 21st August he volunteered to take part in a similar patrol, and again succeeded, not only in entering the enemy’s line, but in exploring a portion of his tunnelling system. His utter disregard of danger is a fine example to those under him.’
James H. J. Burgess was a native of Newark. He served during the Great War with the 9th (Service) Battalion, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment in the French theatre of war from 28 June 1915.
