John Harding attested for the 15th Hussars at London in September 1874. He served with the Regiment during the Second Afghan War 1878-80, and also during the First Boer War (awarded L.S. & G.C. in January 1895). Harding was discharged, 24 September 1895, having served 21 years with the Colours.
