John Telford Varley was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Royal Field Artillery, and served with 118th Battery, R.F.A. during the Great War on the Western Front from 6 April 1918.
John Stephen Burns was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers, and served with them during the Great War on the Western Front from 22 February 1916, being twice Mentioned in Despatches (London Gazettes 21 May 1918 and 7 July 1919).
Ernest Russell was born in Alfriston, Sussex, and attested for the Royal Engineers at Seaford, Sussex, serving with the 1st/1st (Sussex) Army Troops Company, R.E. during the Great War on the Western Front from 21 March 1915. He died of wounds on 20 October 1916, and is buried in Albert Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
