Mark Anthony Tuite was born in London on 2 May 1858 and was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the 67th Regiment of Foot on 1 May 1878. Promoted Lieutenant on 2 March 1879, he served with them in Afghanistan during the Second Afghan War from 8 April 1879 to 1 September 1880. Transferring to the Madras Staff Corps, Indian Army, on 4 October 1884, he was promoted Captain on 1 May 1889, Major on 1 May 1898, and Lieutenant-Colonel on 1 May 1904. He retired with the rank of Brevet Colonel on 1 May 1907.
