James Herbert Davenport was employed as a Craftsman Chargehand at the National Gas Turbine Research Establishment at Pyestock, Hampshire, adjacent to Farnborough airfield. The establishment was the foremost jet engine test facility in Europe from the 1950s to the late 1980s, and the engines for military planes and passenger jets, including Concorde, were tested here. Davenport was awarded his Imperial Service Medal on 13 February 1975, whilst employed by the Ministry of Defence (Procurement Executive).
